The best and worst quotes that Padmé Amidala said in Star Wars

Generally speaking,  it is characters like Luke, Han and Yoda that get all the glory in Star Wars.

Luke blew up the Death Star, Han saved the Princess and Yoda, well Yoda turned out to be one of the most bad ass Jedi Knights that ever roamed Dagobah.

But what about Luke’s mum, Padme Amidala? Her character featured in the prequel movies and yet she is not as revered as those characters. Or is she? Turns out she has quite the fan base.

Padme’s turn as Queen Amidala is actually quite iconic – some of the costumes and hair designs she wore are the stuff of Star Wars legend, she’s very quotable and there is a legion of cosplayers out there who dress up as Padme – particularly in the battle outfit she wore in Attack of the Clones.

Padme’s biggest claim to fame is being the lover and confidant of Anakin Skywalker – it was his love for her that ultimately lead to his fall to the dark side of the Force and also for being the mother of Luke and Leia – the twins whose journey across the stars would lead to restoring the balance in the Force.

So it’s with that in mind, these are the best quotes from Padme. Some are her best, some are her worst.

The Phantom Menace quotes Episode 1

Two strong lines from The Phantom Menace that show Padme as Queen Amidala to be a strong leader despite being effectively a teenager.

I will not condone a course of action that will lead us to war.

I was not elected to watch my people suffer and die while you discuss this invasion in a committee!

How unwitting was Amidala when she spoke to a certain Sith Lord?

It is clear to me now that the Republic no longer functions. I pray you will bring sanity and compassion back to the Senate.

Attack of the Clones quotes, Episode 2

On meeting with Anakin some years since their last encounter.

Ani? My goodness, you've grown.

Warning the Senate of plans to create an army:

I warn you, if you vote to create this army, war will follow. I have experienced the misery of war first-hand; I do not wish to do it again.

In the middle of a tight spot:

Anakin "You call this a diplomatic solution?"

Padme "No, I call it an aggressive negotiation."

Revenge of the Sith quotes, Episode 3

Natalie Portman was a vastly improved actress by the time this film came around and given her character's story arc it called for some more dramatic moments. Portman did well with what she was given.

The announcement of a pregnancy that changed the course of the galaxy’s history:

Anakin Skywalker: Are you all right? You're trembling. What's going on?
Padmé: Something wonderful has happened. Ani, I'm pregnant.

When two people make a promises to each other that they don’t keep…

Amidala: I'm not going to die in childbirth, Anakin. I promise you.
Anakin Skywalker: No, I promise you.

This Padme's worst quote and is possibly the most grating line in the entire film franchise:

Hold me, like you did by the lake on Naboo; so long ago when there was nothing but our love. No politics, no plotting, no war.

As Palpatine is drumming up himself some new powers to become an Emperor of the Republic, Padme expresses her disgust:

So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause.

Anakin’s going wayward and Padmé finally realises things are getting dark:

I don't know you anymore...Anakin you're breaking my heart, you're going down a path I can't follow.

Padmé's heartbreaking parting words as she dies of a broken heart make nice echo to a father and son moment in Jedi:

Obi-Wan... there... is good in him. I know there is... still...

The effect of the quotes are all in the delivery though eh? Do you have any other favourite lines to share or laugh about? Let us know in the comments!
