Who is Joe Johnston and why is he so important to Star Wars?

Joe Johnston Star Wars

Whadda ya know, Joe?

Joe Johnston is fairly famous in Hollywood circles as a director of some pretty big movies. Jumanji. The Rocketeer. Jurassic Park III and a small film called Captain America: The First Avenger.

Before all of that, Johnston actually made his name as an effects artist hired by George Lucas to work on the Star Wars films. Here's some key points:
  • While Ralph McQuarrie is known as the concept artist, it was Johnston that designed many of the space ships.
  • Bobba Fett fans love Joe because he played a large part in the design look of Empire’s most popular bounty hunter. He also was influential on the design of Yoda.
  • As an effects artist and art director he made his mark and Lucas made sure to keep him around him – so much so that Lucas gave him the job of Art Director for Indianna Jones for which he won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
  • Johnston in some form or another worked with Lucas and Steven Spielberg for much of the 1980s before he made the leap from Art Director to simply being a director for Honey, I shrunk the Kids.
  • A final piece of triva is that Joe appeared as an Imperial Gunner and Storm Trooper in A New Hope.

Did Lucasfilm just accidentally on purpose reveal the Millennium Falcon is in Episode 7

We've heard whispers for a while now that somewhere in England a Millennium Falcon is being crafted to use in the new Star Wars 7 movie. But only whispers. Lucasfilm has just revamped their website and in doing so they appear to have manged to include a version of the Millennium Falcon in the background of a photo with Lucasfilm's chairman, Kathleen Kennedy having a production meeting with the troops:

Millenium falcon leak

Is that image to the right of the dude with glasses some concept art of the Millenium Falcon, and is it for Episode 7? And what's that second image, some kind of green land mass? If so was this a deliberate leak? Accidentally on purpose?

Regardless, it doesn't really reveal much! If you're interested, here's the original Falcon concept artwork by Ralph McQaurrie.

Wedge Antilles - the trivia, the legend and the quotes

wedge antilles snowspeeder

Wedge Antilles. He's one of those cool characters found in movies that are there for a brief few moments yet leave a lasting impression. So much so was the impression he made in A New Hope that his skills as a pilot were called upon in Empire and Jedi to help save the day. In fact I think he's the only so called minor character to attend all three major battles in the original trilogy.

So what makes Wedge tick? Who is he and is it true Wedge is Obi Wan Kenobi's Uncle?

Let's deal with that last point first. From a certain point of view, yes, Wedge is Obi Wan's Kenobi - the real deal is that the actor who plays Wedge, Dennis Lawson, is actually Ewan McGregor's real life uncle!

What's the story of Wedge? Where did he come from, where did he go?

Orphaned at age seventeen, he found refuge with the Rebellion after Imperial forces murderd his girlfriend, Mala Tinero. He was considered an exceptional starfighter pilot and this was proved when he was one of the few pilots to survive the Battle of Yavin in A New Hope,

Following that space adventure Wedge founded the famous Rogue Squadron with his Luke Skywalker. Antilles and Skywalker built Rogue Squadron into a renowned unit, and after the Battle of Hoth, Antilles took full command command.

He  famously flew as Red Leader during the Battle of Endor, striking the blow from his X-Wing craft that destroyed the second Death Star and becoming the only pilot to survive both attacks on the Death Stars.

Behind the scenes history

Colin Higgins
Behind the production scenes Wedge's character has been a bit all over the place. In the original film, Antilles was played by two British actors: Colin Higgins and Denis Lawson however they vocal contributions were non existent as they were both dubbed with the voice of American David Ankrum! Legend has has it that Higgins had not learned his lines (the original script had more than was featured in the movie) and so he was fired and replaced by Lawson.

While Wedge had a prominent role in the finale of Jedi, an early script idea featured as early scene in which Antilles was supposed to pilot a TIE after infiltrating an Imperial formation near the Executor, lose control of his craft and require a rescue by Princess Leia, who had also infiltrated the fleet. This was ultimately dropped of course.

Quotes

Return of the Jedi
Lando Calrissian: All right, Wedge. Go for the power regulator on the north tower.
Wedge Antilles: Copy, Gold Leader. I'm already on my way out.

Lando Calrissian: Watch yourself Wedge, Three from above!
Wedge Antilles: Red Three, Red Two, pull in!

Red Two: Got it.
Red Two: Three of them coming in, twenty degrees.
Wedge Antilles: Cut to the left, I'll take the leader.

Empire Strikes Back

Wedge and Janson have just brought down an Imperial Walker that was attack the Hoth base.
Wedge Antilles: Whoa! That got him!

A New Hope

Luke: "But it's not impossible. I used to bull's-eye womp rats in my T-16 back home, and they're not much bigger than two meters!"
Wedge: "Yeah, and were the womp rats shooting at you with turbolaser cannon?"

Wedge wasn't the only pilot on the ride along with Luke in ANH - check out the story of Biggs Darklighter.

The 5 seemingly worst things George Lucas did to enrage Star Wars nerds everywhere by changing things up years later.

For a huge number of Star Wars fans, the first three movies were perfect. There was no need to go back and touch them up. And then there are the prequels and the haters pretty much hate. So here's a list of the things that fans probably consider are the worst things the brilliant George Lucas did to enrage the fans.

Not that we care, we love George and think the things he does to make his movies better are done with love. Yes, somethings he got a little bit wrong but the venom that the internet spits when it reads his name is unwarranted.

But here's the list:

Han shot first

Han shot first in Star Wars in 1977. Lucas had some modern day views and with the Special Edition made the exchange with Greedo very ambiguous, as if to suggest Gredo shot first. No matter how Lucas tries to frame it, Han originally shot first and any suggestion of change enrages fans across the world

Christiansen is added to Jedi

This one actually annoys this author. On the DVD release of Jedi, post Prequels - the celebration scene on Endor used to feature the OLD version of Vader where he has just been hanging out with Luke as he dies on the Death Star. On the DVD release, Sebastian Shaw is replaced with a likeness of the YOUNG Hayden Christiansen. It makes no sense and pisses people off and fair enough we say.

Yes, we understand what Lucas was going for, he's showing the version of Anakin before he turned to the Dark Side but so what, Vader had just redeemed himself which was pretty damn awesome so why can't he turn up to the Ewok Village as himself?

Ewok eyes

In a digital release of Return of Jedi, George added some life to an Ewok's eyes so they blinked. The internet lost it's shit over that one. But not as much as the:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

That 'no' is what Vader cried out when the duplicitous  Darth Sidius told him that Vader himself had killed Padmé. This over the top cry took a little shine of that had been an excellent end to Revenge of the Sith. But Lucas went one further and added it to Jedi as well - so when when Luke is about to learn what mastery of the Force really means, Vader let's it slip again. Jeez.

Jar Jar Binks

You are quite right, Jar Jar is not a Lucas tinkering with a film. He's a full blown character from Phantom Menace that many of the first generation of Star Wars fans simply cannot stand. He's annoying, doesn't look 'cool' and ruined all the good scenes the movie has. And fans hates the prequels largely because of this nonsense.

That said, young kids absolutely love the guy and the prequels so go figure, may be Lucas knew what he was doing.

Carrie Fisher exposes herself via see through dress and by that smile, we think she knows it...

Carrie Fisher in a see through dress

Let's be frank, this is just an excuse to post a picture of Carrie Fisher's nipples.

You can see them poking out from underneath her dress. Like sirens to a sailor. That look suggests she knew what she was doing... She had been in a relationship with Han, we wonder if she was deliberately teasing him with her feminine charms?

Here's nine more sexy pictures of Carrie Fisher dressed as Leia.

Also, how bad are those suits Harrison and Hamill are wearing? Bad? They are awesome! I think they must have borrowed them from their grandads!
