George Lucas was so busy doing Star Wars duties he actually didn't remember his film had opened!

george lucas young

George Lucas was so involved with production duties for the international versions of Star Wars that he forgot that his film had actually been released on the day it was! He's how he described that day which pretty much changed the movie business forever.

"I was mixing sound on foreign versions of the film the day it opened here. I had been working so hard that, truthfully, I forgot the film was being released that day.

My wife was mixing New York, New York at night at the same place we were mixing during the day, so at 6:00 she came in for the night shift just as I was leaving on the day shift. So we ran off across the street from the Chinese Theatre and there was a huge line around the block.

I said, 'What's that?' I had forgotten completely, and I really couldn't believe it."

That's pretty crazy really. How one can forget that the movie one has spent the last 4 - 5 years making is being released in theaters that day? It perhaps does give some insight into how the man works - all work and no play!

Captain Phasma quotes from The Force Awakens

captain phasma force awakens

Captain Phasma quotes from The Force Awakens

Captain Phasma, known as the 'Chrome Stormtrooper' by many fans is the hand of the First Empire. They are effectively the 'second' bad guy after Kylo Ren. Phasma is played by Gwendoline Christie, famous for her role in Game of Thrones.

Quotes

“Move to your ships, now.”.

“On my command… ”

“Fire FN2187.”

“Submit your blaster for inspection.”

At a key point on the Star Killer base, Finn, Han and Chewie are trying to bring down the shields when they run into Captain Phasma and the two following conversations occur:

Finn: You remember me?
Captain Phasma: FN-2187.
Finn: Not anymore. The name's Finn and I'm in charge. I'm in charge now, Phasma! I'm in charge!
Han Solo: [to Finn] Bring it down. Bring it down.

Captain Phasma: You can't be so stupid as to think this will be easy. My troops will storm this block and kill you all.
Finn: I disagree. What do we do with her?
Han Solo: Is there a garbage chute? Trash compactor?
Finn: Yeah, there is!

When the dust wind turns...

stormtroopers prepare for battle card

I'm currently reading the short story collection Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina for the first time. It's a good read and perhaps more consistent than Tales of the Bounty Hunter was.

I just finished a story that might have served as some inspiration for the character of Finn in The Force Awakens.

In the teaser trailer. Finn is the storm trooper that now famously  jumped up into the screen shot in the trailer. He appears to be a stormtrooper and he appears to be in a spot of bother. Is he on the run?

Internet scuttlebutt suggests that Finn's character has decided he doesn't want to be a Trooper any more after apparently being ordered to burn down a village.

Enter a short story called 'When the dust wind turns, a Stormtroopers tale'. The protagonist is a newish recruit who comes to realise serving the Emperor is not for him and after murdering his Captain in a firefight with Han Solo during the escape sequence on Mos Eisley, he resolves to become a spy for the Rebels.

If the rumours of Finn's character development are true one can only wonder how this short story may have helped inspired it.

This author is not hugely well read in the Star Wars expanded universe - are there any other tales out there of stormtroopers who have defected to the Rebels?

Sony email leak gives credence to Han Solo dying theory!

The merits of commenting on a stolen email aside, here's an interesting piece of writing from Production for Columbia Pictures Michael De Luca discussing Disney's Star Wars with Sony Pictures Entertainment co-Chairman Amy Pascal who will now be infamously entangled in the hacked emails leak.

"Star Wars: Any studio would have lost josh trank and rian Johnson to this, it's freaking Star Wars. Your After Earth writer Gary Whitta is writing Gareth Edwards stand alone Star Wars film. Simon Kinberg is writing Josh Tranks. No one knows what they're about but Boba Fett is rumored to be the subject of one. Rian Johnson as you know is doing the main ones, episodes 8 and 9 of the Luke and Leia story lines, after JJ. Not sure anything is gained by looking at what Lucasfilm is doing except we are stalking all these people too, except Whitta whom I think blows.”

If you've been lurking around you may have read my theory that I think Han Solo dies in The Force Awakens - my reasoning is that this gig is a one picture deal for Ford so he can get another Indiana Jones film made.

The reference to films 8 and 9 being "Luke and Leia story lines" seems quite telling. If we presume that De Luca is truly in the know, he would have said if Han was a major factor. If we make an a priori deduction, Han isn't featured and thus is dead!

Maybe this is a bit of a stretch but time will tell.

Finn / Stormtrooper FN-2187 quotes from The Force Awakens by John Boyega

John Boyega picture from The Force Awakens
Finn quotes from The Force Awakens

Finn is one of the new protagonists for the new Star Wars trilogy. His character is a Storm Trooper that rejects his place with the First Order, only to have to confront it when he comes into contact with Rey and Poe Dameron, a Resistance X-Wing pilot.

Originally known only as the Stormtrooper designation of 'FN-2187', he was re-named Finn by captured pilot Poe Dameron during their daring escape from Kylo Ren's command ship.

Boyega proved to be quite the actor, pulling off both earnest and comedic qualities very well for some great laughs and a heroic effort against Kylo Ren with Luke's saber.

Finn's quotes from The Force Awakens:

"I was raised to do one thing. But I've got nothing to fight for."
"You don't know a thing about me, what I've seen. We all need to run!"
To Captain Phasma "The name's Finn and I'm in charge now"
"I never should have rescued you!"
"Listen, I've had a pretty messed up day!"
"We go back to Jakku, we die"
"Stay low and put up the shields"
"We need cover, quick!"
"I don't know what to do!"
"Are we really doing this?"
"I'm getting pretty good at this!" - said as Finn shoots down another TIE fighter whilst in the gunner seat on the Millenium Falcon as he and Rey are trying to escape Jakku.
"I'm a Big Deal in the resistance."

Han Solo: "Are you sure you're up for this?"
Finn "hell no"

Finn: asking about what they should do with Captain Phasma - What should we do with her?
Han Solo: Is there a garage chute... or trash compactor?

Finn: What about that ship?
Rey: That one's garbage
Running to a ship as it is blown up by a Tie Fighter
Finn: The garbage will do!

The garbage turns out to be the Millennium Falcon! The fast hunk of junk in the galaxy!

Poe Dameron quotes from The Force Awakens

Poe Dameron quotes from The Force Awakens

Poe is played by actor Oscar Issac and appears to be in line to play the 'Han Solo' character of the new Star Wars trilogy. Not much detail has leaked around his role yet but it's rumored that he gets captured along with Finn which requires a dramatic rescue!

From the second teaser trailer:

"Woohoo!"

"We've got company" So says Poe to Lor San Sekka when the First Order arrive.

“So who talks first? You talk first? I talk first?”
"The Resistance Will Not Be Intimidated." So says a staunch Poe to the mind reading Kylo Ren. His failure to withstand Kylo's mind probing is a set up so that when Kylo fails to get an advantage over Rey, it's more impressive.

"Red squad blue squad take my lead" - Poe leading the X -Wing Squadron as they assault the Takodona base.

"All teams, give it everything you've got!"

"We got a lot of company!" as he's piloting an X-Wing in a battle. "All right, let's light it up"

Finn during his rescue of Poe on board Kylo Ren's ship.

Poe "Why Are You Helping Me?"
Finn "Because It's The Right Thing To Do."
Poe "...You Need A Pilot."
Finn: "I Need A Pilot."

Rey quotes from The Force Awakens

Rey Solo (!) quotes from The Force Awakens

Rey is the breakout star of the Force Awakens. A strong, indepedent lass, she has no problems footing it with the big guys in terms of sass, wit and demonstrating her prowess with a staff or lightsaber. She is quite the quotable character.

Rey is considered to be the new Princess Leia for the new trilogy of Star Wars films, however she's more of a physical fighter than Leia ever was. Which is not to suggest any weakness on Leia's part, just that she's fought a light saber duel and Leia has not!

Rey quotes from The Force Awakens

"I am no-one"

“You’ll never be as powerful as Darth Vader.”

Where do you come from? To BB-8 on Jakku.

BB-8 replies with his unique phrasing,

"Classified? me too"

"I know all about waiting. "

BB-8 asks for what. Rey replies "For family"

An exasperated Rey says to Finn "Stop taking my hand!"

To an as yet not introduced Finn: "I don't know your name"

While she's flying the Falcon "BB-8 hold on!" - He doesn't.

As Finn and Rey flee the Storm Trooper attack:

Finn "We can't out run them!"

Rey "We might, in that quad jumper"

Finn "We need a pilot"

Rey "We've got one!"

To which a TIE Fighter destroys the quad jumper before their eyes.

Finn: 'what about that ship?'

Finn points off screen to his right

Rey: 'that ship is garbage!'

The ship they were running to explodes

Rey: 'garbage will do!'

This is the moment the Falcon is revealed as its a great Ray quote, a fan favorite and one which every laughed at the first time they saw The Force Awakens..

Han Solo as he offers Rey his pistol:"You might need this"
Rey: "I  think I can handle myself:
Han Solo: "That's why I'm giving it to you!"

Which as noted in the comments below, that's quite the exchange as Han Solo is making a judgement about her abilities and that she actually NEEDS the gun. Whether he's right or wrong about that is up for debate.

Rey had a great exchange with a Stormtrooper that was guarding her. The cool secret about this scene was that James Bond himself played the part of JB-007 - it was Craig Daniel under the helmet!

Rey: You will remove these restraints and leave this cell with the door open.

Stormtrooper: What did you say?

Rey: You will remove these restraints and leave this cell with the door open.

Stormtrooper: I will tighten these restraints, scavenger scum!

Rey: You will remove these restraints and leave this cell with the door open.

Stormtrooper: I will remove these restraints and leave this cell with the door open.

JB-007 leaves and Rey chances her arm once more:

Rey: You will drop your weapon.

Stormtrooper: annnnddddd I will drop my weapon.

Rey as she remembers something while dueling with Kylo Ren "The Force".

Rey to Finn as he lies in a coma following his beating he took from Kylo Ren:

"We'll See Each Other Again. I Believe That."

Kylo Ren quotes from The Force Awakens

Force Awakens quotes by Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren quotes from The Force Awakens

First unleashed to the Star Wars universe in The Force in Awakens, the evil Kylo Ren is played by actor Adam Driver.

He is not a Sith Lord but is part of the the Knights of Ren, taking orders and guidance from the First Order's Supreme Leader Snoke.

His real name is Ben Solo, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa - making him part of the Skywalker lineage.

His dialogue during The Force Awakens was at times quite funny.

Kylo Ren Quotes:
  • "I will fulfill our Destiny"
  • "Nothing will stand in our way. I will finish what you started".
  • "I'll show them the power of the darkness"
  • "Forgive me. I feel it again... the call from light. Supreme Leader senses it. Show me again the power of the darkness, and I'll let nothing stand in our way. Show me, grandfather, and I will finish what you started." Kylo says this to Darth Vader's disfigured head gear that Luke burnt at the end of Return of the Jedi.
  • "The droid... stole a freighter?"
  • "No one will stand in our way"
  • "I've been waiting for this for a long time"
  • "That weapon is mine!"
  • "Don't be afraid"
  • "I feel it too"
  • "Don't fight it...you know you can't"
  • "Show Me Again, Grandfather, And I Will Finish What You Started."
  • "I know what I must do. I don't know if I'm strong enough to do it. Will you help me?" to his father, Han Solo just before he stabs him through the chest.

Han Solo as he walks up to Kylo on the bridge yells "BEN!" and Kylo responds with "Han Solo"

Three generations from a galaxy far away....

Kira?
Leia
Padme

Kira Solo quotes from The Force Awakens

Update: This character is officially called Rey.

Kira Solo quotes from The Force Awakens

Kira is the rumoured name for Daisy Ridley's character in Star Wars The Force Awakens - internet scuttlebut suggests that Kira is the child of Han Solo and Princess Leia Organna.

Kira is quite likely just a code name for the character so don't eat your hat just yet.

Uber quotes from The Force Awakens

Uber played by Andy Serkis
Andy might be playing Uber?
Update: Uber is now formally named Supreme Leader Snoke

Uber is apparently an evil Sith Lord (well all Sith are evil right?) that's running the show in The Force Awakens.

Rumours suggest this is the character played by Andy Serkis who did the voice over in the first teaser trailer for the film.

Here's the singular quote from that release:

There has been an awakening, have you felt it? The dark side and the light.

Word on the street is that Uber manages to corrupt Adam Driver's character and turn him to the dark side. But who really knows if this is true, nothing has been confirmed as fact, despite what people will have you believe.

Ren's red broadsword is the equivalent of Chekov's gun so everyone should sit back and relax and let what will happen, happen

sith broadsword saber

Everyone has had something to say about the red broadsword lightsaber that featured in the Force Awakens. I had an idea and I thought it was worth writing down.

The saber is the equivalent of Chekov's gun.

Anton Chekov wrote that an author had to "Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there."

What this means in terms of the broad sword is that its a deliberate action for it to be in the film and in the teaser trailer. It's not there for some cosmetic effect or as an exhaust as some have suggested, it's there as a broad sword - and that means its functionality will play a part in The Force Awakens.

Forget that it could be chopped off and rendered useless as many have suggested. Kasdan and Abrams are not that stupid, nor is Lucas who has been keeping an eye on things behind the scenes as a creative consultant.

This writer wonders about a more different question regarding the sabers in the new film - will they add to or debunk the theory that the Star Wars movies are inversely as good as the number of times a lightsaber is ignited.

Opuchi Andy Serkis quotes from The Force Awakens

Update: This character turned out to be called Supreme Leader Snoke

Opuchi - Andy Serkis - quotes from The Force Awakens

This is a place holder post - the name of Serkis' character is merely rumoured at this stage - code name is apparently Uber.

Montross quotes from The Force Awakens

Update: Montross did not make it into the Film. We speculate that he was a contender for being a patron at the Cantina in Maz's Kanata's castle.

Montross quotes from The Force Awakens - Star Wars

This is a place holder post - the name of is merely rumoured at this stage. Who could this robotic character be? The leaked concept art suggests the character could be a cyborg of some kind. If we recall that Darth Vader himself was more machine than man then it's no stretch for Montross to be a cyborg.

What part does Montross have to play in The Force Awakens? Is he a man, is he a machine? Is he Sean Connery? Only time will tell!

Why is there a black Storm Trooper in The Force Awakens?

Finn.
Apparently some people have been a little confused about why the Star Wars trailer featured a black man wearing a Storm Trooper’s armour. The character is called Finn.

The confusion arises due to the story told in Attack of the Clones as to how the Clone Army came to be brought about. The troopers were clones of Madalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett. Fett of course also being the father of cult Star Wars character Bobba Fett.

Temura Morrison who played Jango is a Maori but does not look like Boyega.

By the time the events of A New Hope came round, the original clone soldiers were beginning to age and it seemed a natural choice for the Empire to recruit willing men (and maybe woman?) into their army. I have a feeling I read somewhere the Emperor also destroyed the original clone facilities too which probably hampered things.

The Force Awakens is set some 30 odd years after Jedi – so causal fans could be forgiven for being a bit confused as to why John Boyega suddenly popped up.

Those who complained that there was a black man on the screen cannot be forgiven. As Boyega notably said shortly after the trailer’s release “get used to it”. Fine words.

If you count Empire as being one of the first BIG films to feature a black man in a film, Star Wars has lead the way in that department. Side note - Alien which was released in 1979 featured Yaphet Kotto - he actually turned down the role of Lando Calrissian thus giving Billy Dee Williams to cement his career.
