Doug Chiang's Star Wars Prequel concept art designs
When Ralph McQuarrie retired and opted not to do the design work for The Phantom Menace, George Lucas turned to Doug Chiang and said, "pick up your pencil, Mate, I need some drawings".
And draw he did.
Here's some of the design concepts he came up with for The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

It was a great matchup and truly added to the lore of Star Wars.
In this picture below, it's great to see the cold and darkness of the design actually made it into the production of the movie.
Haters are always gonna hate but I thought the Pod Racer scene in the Phantom Menace was a great piece of cinematic entertainment.

It was epic - inspired by the famous chariot race of the Ben Hur movie, the race featured all kinds of cool designs and young Anakin's came one of the most popular vehicles from the movie.
If only the Prequels used a lot more obvious practical effects, and stuck to more simpler designs. Sometimes, seeing too much for the eyes, is disorienting to a point where you don't know what you're looking at.
ReplyDeleteThey actually used a surprising about of practical effects that are so good, most people think it's CGI. You'd be surprised at how much is practical or even how much of the CGI is even partially practical in some shots. On the comment about things maybe being too disorienting because there's a lot on the screen...it's a decent point.
