A keen Star Wars fan on Reddit pointed out this moment in
Revenge of the Sith. It is the last time that Obi Wan Kenobi and his padawan
learner Anakin Skywalker spoke as friends. Which is nice and all but the even
though I can’t remember how many times I have seen the movie, I never picked up
the deliberate lighting placed on the Jedi Knights. Anakin is in the dark shadows while Young Ben
is bathed in an almost holy glow. This is presumably to emphasise what’s about
to happen and thus could actually be a literal piece of foreshadowing…
In this scene Obi Wan says to Anakin, “Goodbye old friend”
which also obviously has broader meaning than an ordinary goodbye.
Another Redditor made a pithy
observation about the symbolism that Lucas made – “ If this was a
screenshot of a similar visual metaphor from Breaking Bad, everybody would be
falling over themselves about how brilliant Vince Gilligan is.”
Which pretty
much sums things up nicely in terms of how much love the Prequels get – it’s
certainly nice to see the Reddit crew celebrating this nice film making moment!

Is Wedge Antilles really Obi-Wan Kenobi's Uncle? Yes,
from a certain point of view.
The best
Obi-Wan quotes this side of the galaxy (it’s far, far away)
This is the last
time Anakin and Obi-Wan spoke as friends.
Here's my thought on it. It wasn't just the last time they spoke as friends. It was the last time Obi Wan and Anakin spoke, ever. It was their final goodbye. The next time they met, Anakin was no longer Anakin. He was Darth Vader.
ReplyDeleteYes I think you are correct, I guess technically Anakin had sworn his allegiance to Sidious prior to their encounter.
DeleteThis is interesting because in at least 4 places, in TFA, there's a light-being-eaten-by-the-dark symbolism:
ReplyDelete1) opening scene
2) Kylo walking towards Rey just before 3). Rey is lit up by lightning. As Kylo walks towards her, his dark form eclipses her.
3) Rey's dumping - script says the sun "is strangely eclipsed. as if being eaten by darkness"
4) Han's death - same as 3
also the Rey of light from Rey to Han is extinguished
also Kylo's face darkens
5) Chapter 1 of Bloodline before Darth Leia speaks there is A CLOUD
6) poem at the beginning of the novelization:
"First comes the day
Then comes the night.
After the darkness
Shines through the light.
The difference, they say,
Is only made right
By the resolving of gray
Through refined Jedi sight.
