Zahn has not met with JJ so no Thrawn in The Force Awakens

As the debate and speculation about the Extended Universe being in Episode 7 rises to a *mild* screech across keyboards around the world, a rumour got out that Timothy Zhan had met with JJ Abrams about some kind of involvement in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. 

Zahn wrote a very popular series of Star Wars featuring a player named Thrawn that many fans would like to see in the movie.

But to his credit Zahn has shot down the suggestion he’s in on the action with JJ by leaving a comment on Club Jade’s page saying 

“I usually don’t get involved with this stuff, but since my name came up I thought it might be useful for me to state for the record that Abrams and I have *not* met. For whatever that’s worth.”

So one could loosely interpret that as being Thrawn isn’t in Star Wars ….

Wish was nice of him to do as there's enough lies and mistruths out there already without people having to get their nickers in a twist about whether a blue smurf will appear in the movies ;)

Meet 'Chopper' the new droid character from Star Wars Rebels. He's actually a cat.

Meet Chopper. He's the new lead droid character for Star Wars Rebels. Who needs RD2D when you have this guy? Well, we'll always need R2 but it's cool to see another astromech unit will become a featured player in the Expanded Star Wars universe.

Dave Filoni who you may know as a big deal at Lucasfilm says of Chooper:

"The easiest way to sum up Chopper that we took to on the writing team is that; If Artoo's your favorite Dog, Chopper's a Cat."

When our heroes get old, they simply get old

We've noticed a lot of people commenting on how Star Wars 'Big 3' have aged badly or are simply surprised at how they look. These comments are largely directed at Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill.

This is possibly due to the fact they are not in the public eye as often or as widespread as Harrison Ford is. 

I think some people are disappointed that Carrie no longer has the body that made the slave bikini famous. Jedi was 30 years ago, it's ridiculous to think Fisher's body is still perky or that Hamill still has his wide eyed blonde good locks (and locks).

What I've also noticed is that even as Peter Mayhew has aged just as much as the other cast, he doesn't come in for such commentary. I figure that's largely due to people seeing him on screen as a furry Wookie and thus his 'classic look' is not anchored into people's brains as Ford's Solo 'look' is.

Anthony Daniels, who played C3PO is an exception, he must have  found a handy fountain of youth at the back of his garden as he's looking pretty good! 

People will just need to accept that every one has become a lot older and they'll have some lines across their faces, they won't walk as tall as they may have in the past and perhaps not be featured wearing a bikini.

This next Star Wars movie is probably going to be a last hurrah for the Big 3 as it would seem a good guess the film is setting up a new saga and will hopefully feature a new set of heroes for us to love and cheer on as we chomp on our ever more expensive popcorn on opening night.

Did you ever expect Star Wars to be such a critical success?

I didn't expect it to be a critical success, I thought people would like it, because it took so many elements from movies we were familiar with, pirate, cowboy movies, war movies, and added humor. That's the thing that got me. Science fiction usually isn't funny. They have an 8 ft furry dog driving a spaceship, he's naked except headphones, that's funny. Even if it doesn't get great reviews it'll be a cult movie. People will go watch it at midnight because its so unique. I thought it would be popular but never thought it would be on the cover of Time magazine.

Mr. Hamill, when I was six, all I wanted to be was you (Luke) and save the galaxy in my starfighter. Who was your hero when you were six?

I used to watch superman on TV, and i loved the idea of flying. i used to wonder if i wanted to fly like superman or peter pan. Peter Pan looked like it was more fun, superman was so bolt straight. And i loved Zorro, the old Disney Zorro. What is it with guys with secret identities who go out and fight crime? And James bond. I loved all that stuff.

Apparently Carrie Fisher let it slip that you guys will be in Episode 7, any response?

The only character I know for sure is returning is my friend R2-D2. He hasn’t stopped beeping about it.

How proud are you of the Star Wars Holiday Special? Did you know at the time of shooting it that it would turn out the way it did?

Oh yeah. I thought it was a mistake from the beginning. It was just unlike anything else in the Star Wars universe. And I initially said that I didn't want to do it, but George said it would help keep Star Wars in the consciousness and I wanted to be a team player so I did it. And I also said that I didn't think Luke should sing, so they cut that number. And now, I think we shouldn't be ashamed of it. They should put on the extra of the DVD's - it shows how incredibly fallible we are! At that same time, it did introduce Boba Fett in an animated sequence, so it's significant in that respect. Plus Art Carney was in it, who is one of my favorite comedic actors of all time.

Are you still upset that you weren't able to pick up those power converters?

I get ribbed for that line because it was so whiney. And I remember at the time, I had to make it as juvenile as possible so that I can show how Luke matures later. So it should be embarrassing. It should be whiney and childish. But boy, has it come back to haunt me. I don't think I ever got the chance to finally pick them up.

Lucas is Canon, everything else is Extended Universe

There has been a bit of internet chatter about how Star Wars canon was being settled at the moment. We ignored most of it as there was too much fan boy speculation based on a single statement on twitter that had no depth.

But the pundits' attention was enough for a reporter to ask That Special Lady in charge of Star Wars, Kathleen Kennedy was the deal on canon now was, and she makes it very clear: 

"George was so clear as to how that works. The canon that he created was the Star Wars saga. Right now, episode seven falls within that canon. The spin-off movies, or we may come up with some other way to call those films, they exist within that vast universe that he created" 

Which we interpret as anything George has hands on with was canon, anything else is extended universe material. So can we assume them there will be no cloned Emperor to contend with?

But then  Kennedy made the waters a little muddy:

"There is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the standalone films) in and out of the saga episodes. Consequently, from the creative standpoint, it's a roadmap that George made pretty clear"

That last one is possibly not a statement about canon but it does offer an insight into the stand alone films - they could be about anything within the Star Wars universe. Which means KK basically said nothing much new on the Star Wars front!

Darth Talon cosplay by Player Two

Here's some impressive, most impressive, Darth Talon cosplay by Kiara who is perhaps better known as Player Two!

Player Two said of the photo shoot and choice of character:

"When I came across Talon a year ago I fell in love with the character. She's not only a strong female character but is also a seductress, which I love. I also fell in love with the look of the character and I hope, with the help of Roxy Lee GG, I was able to bring her to life. The body painting itself took 4 long hours to do, but I think it was well worth it. I'm extremely pleased."

So yes, there are nipples in Return of the Jedi. Green ones actually. It's a blink and you'll miss it moment but nipples on green boobs can definitely be seen in a Star War movie:

Given that legend has it Carrie Fisher had to tape down her breasts whilst filming A New Hope (as they kept bouncing around which distracted from 'the look' Lucas was going for) it's pretty amusing for some cleavage action to occur in Jedi.

Facts about Admiral Ackbar

Probably the most popular character in the history of movies that looks like a giant gold fish, Admiral Ackbar was one of the heroes in the Battle of Endor, commanding Rebel fleet with enough resolve to give the Millennium Falcon enough time to carry out it's mission.

But who is this character? Where did he come from and what kind of stuff is he made from?

Origin of the character in Return of the Jedi pre-production

During a production meeting where George Lucas, film Director Richard Marquand, and others players had divided up their coterie of aliens between foreground and background creatures, Lucas offered Marquand the chance to create a legend:

“George suddenly said to me, ‘Who’s going to play Admiral Ackbar? I just decided he should be a creature, so you can pick out Admiral Ackbar.’ I said, ‘George, I think this should be your decision. He’s one of your new characters here.’

And he said, ‘No, you choose.’”

Marquand then determined to choose "the most delicious, wonderful creature out of the whole lot, this great big wonderful Calamari man with a red face and eyes on the side.”

It was a painting by concept artist Nilo Rodis-Jamero.

According to Marquand, “One or two people around the table, who shall be nameless, said they thought it was a terrible idea: ‘People are just going to laugh when they see this guy.’”

So what species of creature is Ackbar?

He is a Mon Calamari a sentient species indigenous to the world of Dac. Many fans simply refer to the Mon Calamari as Calamari.

They are humanoid in shape and form and stand about 1.7m tall.

They are most commonly seen with salmon-coloured skin tones. Rogue One's Admiral Raddus was a blue grey colour because he came from a cooler climate than Ackbar.

What is Ackbar’s back story? How did he join the Rebel Alliance?

The expanded Star Wars universe has come to the party and back filled the origin of Ackbar. The short version is Mon Calamari was attacked by the Galactim Empire and Ackbar was forced to act as an interpreter for Grand Moff Tarkin.

He was freed from captivity during a failed attempt by Rebel forces to capture Tarkin.

He joined the Rebel Alliance and helped convince his species to support the cause, playing an integral part in persuading his people to contribute their fleet of starships to the Rebel Alliance. Ackbar then built his way up in the Rebel Alliance to the point that he was seen as an Admiral in Jedi. 

What kind of stuff is Ackbar made from?

In Jedi Ackbar senses that the Rebel forces are over run and he signals a retreat which seems like a pussy thing to be doing at time like that but he was able to be convinced by Lando Calrissian do stick it out a little longer. He then set to work and managed the fleet er admirably well showing a clear head for battle conditions.

What is the origin of the quote "It's a trap"?

Everyone knows that Ackbar's phrase "It's a trap!" has became almost more famous that Ackbar himself. But that was not the original line in Kasdan's script for Jedi. The actual words were, "It's a trick!"

During post production it was felt the line didn't quite have the desired effect. The change is now the stuff of Star Wars and film making legend.

What is his full name? Where does Gial come from?

The first name of Ackbar's character, Gial, was not formal published until the 2012 release of the Star Wars reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare, some 28 years after Ackbar first appeared on the silver screen!

Such was Ackbar's enduring popularity, he was brought back for a small role in The Force Awakens as a military advisor to Princess Leia.
