Luke learned the lessons of Obi-Wan. Will Rey?

Sep 9, 2018
There's a million little things to love about The Last Jedi.

Rian Johnson's attention to detail is simply phenomenal. There are so many subtle moments and burst of trivia and this yet image set we spied on Twitter showed us another detail.

Can you work it out?

luke learns the lesson of obi-wan

Luke had learned his lesson from Obi-Wan and applied it when it came to the end of TLJ.

In ANH, Obi-Wan set out to find Darth Vader and fight him to give Luke and Han and Chewie enough time to get the Princess off the Death Star. With the benefit of hindsight, we also now that Obi-Wan was setting Luke on a new path to explore the Force.

In The Last Jedi, Luke seeks out the grandson of Darth Vader to let Leia again escape by stalling him.

Both selfless acts directly resulted in the deaths of each Jedi.

In the TLJ Luke told Rey he would teach her three lessons but the third was actually cut from the film - does Luke's sacrifice perhaps then count as the third lesson? (And if so, that's some masterful editing!)

With this understanding of Luke's actions, it adds another layer over Luke's character arc. Sure, it would have been cool to see him take down Kylo with a green saber but in the end, we get the spiritual side, the essence and the heart of what it means to be a Jedi.

It's exactly the kind of thing that would have made Yoda and Obi-Wan extremely proud of their student.

So the lesson was learned by Luke but will Rey learn hers and how will she experience it?
